FAQs

  • What should I consider when choosing a fluoride product?

Several factors affect patient acceptance, including preferred flavours, texture, ease of use and effectiveness.

  • What is the pH level of an acidulated fluoride compared to a neutral?

Acidulated formulas have a pH around 3.5 versus 7 for neutral formulas. Neutral formulas are recommended and used mostly for adults because many have esthetic restorations that can discolour with APF formulas.

  • Are Pro-Foam bottles recyclable?

Given that the product is considered a drug in the U.S. and a natural health product in Canada, Medicom recommend that empty bottles not be recycled but rather disposed of, as any other drug product containers.

  • What fluoride treatment method takes the least amount of time?

Fluoride application is most effective when applied for up to 4 minutes. APF gel and foams are marketed as a "one-minute formula" to increase patient acceptance and comfort.

  • At what age should children receive their first fluoride treatment?

Most children should receive their first fluoride treatment when they are around 6 years old. In high-risk situations, bi-annual treatment may begin at 3 years of age.

  • Is Pro-Foam 2% neutral sodium fluoride a 60-second application or a 4-minute application?

The label suggests using the gel for up to 4 minutes whenever possible. However, Health Canada suggests the use of any fluoride treatment for at least 1 minute.
