• What is Chlorhexidine?

  Chlorhexidine is an in-office and home care oral rinse used in conjunction with home care programs. Chlorhexidine rinse may be used for the treatment of gingivitis, periodontist, oral irrigation, post-operative healing and reduction of tissue inflammation, bleeding and plaque accumulation.

• Is Chlorhexedine tinted or transparent?

  Chlorhexedine is tinted (yellowish colour). It is best kept in an opaque container.

• Will Chlorhexidine stain teeth?

  Chlorhexidine will cause a temporary slight brown or gray stain. This stain is only extrinsic (outer tooth surface) and will not penetrate the tooth. This slight brown stain can be easily polished or brushed away. Proper hygiene (daily brushing and flossing) will help reduce staining, but professional polishing will remove it.

• What flavour is Medicom Clorhexidine?

  Medicom Chlorhexidine comes in a mild, pleasant mint flavour.

• Can Chlorhexidine be refrigerated?

  No. Temperature control is important to product stability.

• Is Chlorhexidine gluten free?

  Yes, Chlorhexidine is gluten free and can safely be used by individuals who are allergic to gluten.

• Can Chlorhexidine be used more frequently than every six months?

  Yes, it is safe to use as often as twice daily under a healthcare professional's supervision.

• Is a whitening treatment recommended after using chlorhexidine?

  No. Whitening is not required because the staining is not permanent.

• Can a patient eat or drink immediately after using chlorhexidine?

  Patients should not eat or drink hot liquids immediately following treatment and for the number of hours recommended by their healthcare professional.

• What is the pH value of Chlorhexidine?

  The pH value of Chlorhexidine is between 5 and 7.

• What are the benefits of a fluoride gel versus a rinse?

  Traditionally, 1.23% APF (acidulated phosphate fluoride) gel is the most common in-office product used in the prevention of tooth decay, especially for children. Rinses are typically used as an alternative to when patients cannot tolerate gel or foam.

• Are fluoride treatments effective after age 16?

  Yes. Topical fluoride treatments are widely accepted for the lifetime of teeth. This continues to be an area of ongoing research. For adults, it is recommended to use neutral fluorides (gels and foams) because many adults have esthetic restorations that can discolour with APF formulas.

• What is the pH level of an acidulated fluoride compared to a neutral?

  Acidulated formulas have a pH around 3.5 versus 7 for neutral formulas. Neutral formulas are recommended and used mostly for adults because many have esthetic restorations that can discolour with APF formulas.

• What should I consider when choosing a fluoride product?

  Several factors affect patient acceptance, including preferred flavours, texture, ease of use and effectiveness.

• At what age should children receive their first fluoride treatment?

  Most children should receive their first fluoride treatment when they are around 6 years old. In high-risk situations, bi-annual treatment may begin at 3 years of age.
