FAQs

  • Why do my gums bleed?

The main cause of bleeding gums is plaque, which is a sticky film made up of mostly bacteria that can build up, around, or between your teeth near your gum line. Genetics, pregnancy, and taking certain medications may also play a role in causing your gums to bleed.

  • What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a term that refers to gingivitis and periodontitis, or periodontal disease, all of which are gum disease.

  • What are the symptoms of gum disease?

Symptoms of gum disease (gingivitis) can include red, swollen gums, bad breath, and bleeding gums when you brush or floss.

  • What causes gum disease?

One of the main causes of gum disease is the plaque that builds up around, on, and between your teeth. If it is not removed by regular brushing and flossing it can irritate your gums, causing them to become red and swollen, and they may bleed when you brush your teeth. This stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If these early signs of gum disease are not treated, then it can eventually progress to one of the most serious forms of gum disease, periodontitis, which is irreversible and can lead to tooth loss.

  • Is gum disease a common problem?

Yes. The CDC reports that about 50% of Americans age 30+ have gum disease.

  • What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a reversible form of gum disease. Gingivitis occurs when gums become irritated by plaque that builds up around, on, and between teeth. It can cause swollen, red and bleeding gums, it may also lead to halitosis and receding gums.

  • How can I help prevent gingivitis?

You can help to prevent gingivitis that is caused by the buildup of plaque by adopting a good oral health routine. Brush your teeth twice daily using parodontax™ daily fluoride toothpaste, which is 3x more effective at removing plaque, the main cause of bleeding gums. Floss to remove plaque from hard-to-reach areas between your teeth. Regularly visit your dentist for professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, which can irritate your gums. Your dental professional may spot signs of gum disease before you experience any symptoms.

  • Can gingivitis be reversed?

Gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease, is treatable and reversible in its early stages. Treating gingivitis now may help prevent more serious problems from occurring down the road.

  • What is the proper oral care regimen for bleeding gums?

First, brush with a specialty gum toothpaste like parodontax™ for 2 minutes, twice daily, preferably with a soft-bristled brush. Next, floss to help control plaque build-up, which is the main cause of bleeding gums. Finally, see your dentist every 6 months for professional cleanings.

When plaque bacteria break down pieces of food in your mouth, it releases an unpleasant smelling gas that contributes to bad breath. However, it's important to remember that plaque is just one of many potential causes of bad breath, so make sure to speak to your dentist if you have any concerns.
